Parametric Modeling
Parametric modeling is the hard science of modern day drafting. It uses dimension driven models to simulate what will be machined and fabricated. If a project requires engineering, it allows us to confirm that the structures designed will be adequate for the application. It can also be used for simple applications to get accurate hardware counts for a bill of materials. Essentially your project is built digitally so that its challenges can be addressed before fabrication.
Digital Sculpting
If parametric modeling is heads, then digital sculpting is tails.
It offers the opposite advantages. Sculpting a piece of clay virtually allows us to build things that do not play well with rigid dimensions and stifling rules. It allows the creation of characters and environments or other artistic endeavors. Digital sculpting is often used for 3D printing and other computer automated fabrication. It can be used to design objects like staircase railings or sculptural installations. However, its primary role is typically on the virtual side, creating characters or things for animation which need to look like skin or cloth, rather than having their exact size defined.
Shop Drawings
While design has gone digital, fabrication remains largely analog. Engineers cannot stamp a model. Welders and woodworks still need drawings on the shop floor to build from. Design doesn't work if it can't be built or installed. Drawings aren't just bland records and bills of material. They need to be narratives about how your project is built and installed. Aesthetic Function has the experience of building weird and wonderful projects that require proper instruction on how to make every detail.
Prototyping
Before fabrication begins its often wise to trial run specific aspects of a project. Material samples and object scale can drastically alter a project. Clients don't always know what they want until they can put something in their hand.
